Training and education is one of the main goals of ITA since it has been founded in 1974.

To fullfill this goal ITA has organized training and workshops for many years, alone or in cooperation with Member Nations or with companies that are ITA Prime Sponsors or Supporters.

Between 2000 and 2010 a Working Group (WG 18) was established to produce training and educational material.

In 2007, a Committee on Education and training, ITA-CET, has been created

• To coordinate the interaction and exchanges among the member universities.
• To plan, coordinate and prepare the contents of training sessions and short-courses organised and promoted by the ITA.
• To establish the contents, frames, structures and requirements of the professional master courses endorsed by the ITA, as well analyse the proposal for endorsement.
• To disseminate training and educational materials (texts, presentations, videos etc.).

Finally, in 2009 a Foundation for Education and training was established, ITACET Foundation, with among founders ITA.

The Foundation will have the capacity to offer its services in the field of Education and Professional Training to companies and to professionals, including in countries not ITA members. Its goal is to be the link between all types of professionals working in the very specific sector of tunnelling and underground space: technicians, lawyers, financers, environmentalists, safety…

It will enable to strengthen the links between universities, research, and companies. Moreover, it will be present in the countries which do not have the financial means to organize training courses.
